St. James Catholic Church Cemetery - Est. 1750/1757
St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church Cemetery - Est. 1809

St. Jacques de Cabahannoce Cemetery
(St. James Catholic Church Cemetery)
Present Day

During the contruction of the 1929 levee many plots were moved to this location. In the St. James Cemetery ici repose "here rests" many historic and colonial exiled Acadians who immigrated here between 1764 - 1768 after the "Le Grande Deportation" from Nova Scotia.

We investigated, looking for direct line ancestors, the St. James Catholic Church Cemetery located across the river from Convent, Louisiana. A few cousins and in-laws from the 1764 - 1890 period were found, however the ones we were looking for are either unmarked or have been lost to the river.

These cemeteries date from the mid 1700's and both have a mixture of originally laid graves with graves that have been moved to prevent loosing them to the river. In 1927 this area of the Acadian Coast along the Mississippi River experienced a "great flood" in which the river began shifting and moving. A new levee was constructed which, after completion, stood on land that was previously part of the site of the original St. Michael Cemetery.

Looking for direct line ancestors, we ventured into the St. Michael Cemetery located in Convent, Louisiana. A few cousins and in-laws from the 1764 - 1890 period were found, however the ones we were looking for are either unmarked or have been lost to the river.
